Leahann’riada the forest faerie.

https://www.thepicsees.com/gallery/leahannriada_the_faerie.php

It is autumn which happens to be one of our favourite times of the year. It also happens to be when we first drew this wee picture and so we thought it would be nice to re-share it with you, along with its little story…but before we do we have to tell you a bit about the Kings and Queens of the faerie worlds…

Most people don’t know this, but all faeries are Princes and Princesses. That’s because in the faerie realms it’s not lineage, but deeds that determines who will be next in line to the throne, so anyone can become the next King or Queen. And it’s the world around them that decides who will have the honour to take on this role. However, when and how this is revealed differs greatly within each realm of the faerie worlds. For the forest faeries it’s their leafy hair that declares their new role and it always happens at this time of the year. As the leaves turn into their beautiful autumn colours, so does the hair of all the faeriefolk of the forest. For most their leafy locks turns into bright shades of reds or rich tones of brown. But every year, in every forest one very deserving faerie’s hair will turn gold, crowning them the new King or Queen of the forest faeries.

And that brings us back to this wee art picture. It’s a drawing that we made of our good friend Leahann’riada. She lives in Howl-wind Hollows, an enchanted little forest near our house. Here she helps all the lost little bugs, beetles and creepy crawlies that wandered into these woods to find their way home, or if they prefer to stay, she helps them to find a cosy wee burrow of their own and teach them all about the forest and its ways.

And on the day that we made this drawing we found her telling a wee little beetle-bird, who was Howl-wind hollows’ latest resident, the very same story we just told you – about of the turning of the leaves and the crowning of the faerie Queen or King. About halfway through the story the wee little bug reached out to her and slowly said the word “queen”. Leahann’riada gave a big joyous smile, framed by a blushing face and told the wee bug that she is most flattered, but he must have misunderstood the story, knowing that he’s not yet fluent in the language of the forest. She was just about to re-tell the tale from the start when we noticed it too! Her hair was turning to gold right before our eyes! The forest chose her to be the new faerie Queen of howl-wind hollows and we were there to see it happen! It was amazing and we are so glad we could share a wee bit of this magical moment with you and show you the first official portrait of her majesty the faerie Queen! We hope you like it

A limited signed edition signed print of a wee Goblin called Kale.

https://www.thepicsees.com/shop/print_kale_the_goblin.php

We are very proud to show you our brand new art print which features a portrait we drew of a wee little goblin called Kale. This beautiful signed giclee print measures 7 x 5 inches (with an additional white border of 1 inch all around) and is printed on Hahnemühle’s fine art cotton rag paper. And as for Kale…well, he’s a wee little goblin that loves to play hide and seek. In fact, we met him when Eric was trying to find a bug that happened to crawl underneath the root of an old tree where Kale happened to be hiding. He told us that he wasn’t sure for exactly how long he’s been hiding there, but apparently there was no mushrooms on his hat when he started the game!

A Lovely new Greeting card with a still life (and a dragon pup)

www.thepicsees.com/shop/greetingcard_dragonpup.php

We are so excited to show you this lovely new greeting card that is now available in our wee little webshop. As you can see, it features a beautiful floral still life that we drew…and the dreamers among you might be able to spot a wee little dragon pup on there too! We think this makes it the perfect card for almost anyone…because if you send it to someone who believes that there’s a bit of magic to be found in the world around, they will get to meet this lovely little dragon pup…and if you send the card to someone who does not believe in such things, they will see nothing but a beautiful bunch of tulips with a slight sense of wonder that they just can’t quite place…

The card itself is printed on a nice and sturdy piece of board and has a lovely semi-gloss finish on the outside. The inside of the card is blank (except for one or two little picsee handprints) with a matt finish so that you can write a wee little message in it, and each card comes with a lovely brown envelope that’s made from recycled paper.

The Moonlight Faeries…

https://www.thepicsees.com/gallery/the_moontime_faeries.php

Last night was full moon which means it was a very busy night for the moonlight faeries, so we went to lend them a hand. And when we got back in the wee hours of this morning, we thought it would be nice to share this drawing with you that we drew many such moons ago.
It’s a portrait of our good friend Lindee-Mae who is of course a moonlight fae. And when the moon is full, it’s her job to collect all the moonbeams that gets lost during the night. She will then keep them safe until dawn so that they can become wee shimmers and glimmers on the dew drops the next morning.

The Burrow Elves and the Crawlies…

http://www.thepicsees.com/gallery/root_the_burrow_elf.php

Some of you might recognise this wee friend of ours, but if you don’t, we’d love to introduce you to him. He’s a burrow elf named Root and his wee companions are called slowpoke and hop. They all live in a little hollow underneath one of the cobblestones in our garden. There was a time when it would have been quite rare to find a burrow elf there, but these days it’s very common for them to make their homes under cobblestones. That’s because cobbles tend to be nice and smooth, unlike the wild rocks in the forests, which are full of nasty sharp edges on which you could bump your head. So, whenever a burrow elf finds a loose cobble, they will crawl underneath it and dig out a little hollow that they’ll call home. And they share these little abodes with all the local garden dwellers, like snails and bugs and caterpillars and slugs, which they call the crawlies. They see these crawlies as part of their family and look after them really well…which is why you should never ever take a crawly away from its cobblestone.

Unfortunately, this does happen from time to time. People will lift the cobbles, put the crawlies in a jar and take them home. We don’t know why they think a jar is a good place for a crawly to live but the crawlies sure don’t like it and neither do the burrow elves. And if they suspect that you took one of their crawlies they will sneak into your house and try to rescue them. If you are lucky, they will find them and leave…but if they can’t find the crawlies in question, they will play tricks on you night and day, until they get their crawlies back.

At first it will just be little pranks. They might pull a preposterous face and leave an imprint of it in the butter or maybe they’ll put some onions in your pillowcase. Another favourite is to move things around the moment you put it down or to make your phone call a colleague when you put it in your pocket. But if these pranks don’t do the job, they will start to take things from your house and bury it under the cobbles. Burrow elves are of course quite small so they can only take little things, but this doesn’t mean the big things in the house are safe. That’s because most big things are made up of tiny bits, and tiny folk can take tiny things apart. So even though the big things might stay inside the house, they won’t work very well when all their little parts are hidden outside under the cobbles. And this will go on until everything they can carry or take apart is under the cobblestones or until they find the crawlies…whichever comes first. It is, however, worth remembering that they will always put everything back exactly where they found it if you do the same with the crawlies.

Of course, it does sometimes happen that a crawly gets trapped in your house without you even knowing, so if you can’t find your keys and you really looked everywhere, it might be a good idea to start looking for some crawlies instead. And if you do find a wee frog or a lost little bug carefully pick them up and put them outside by the cobblestones. Chances are you’ll find your keys a few minutes later right where you left them…

Have you met the brown onion brownies?

www.thepicsees.com/gallery/brown_onion_brownies.php

Have you ever met a Brown Onion Brownie? Some of you might have met one or two when we shared a couple of stories with you many moons ago, but if you’ve not yet had the pleasure, we’d love to introduce you – They are of course very easy to recognise because they look almost exactly like onions, only much much smaller (actually onions look like them but that is a story for another time). And they are some of the nicest wee folk you could ever meet, spending all their time travelling about in search of things to fix and friends in need. Just remember when you meet one you should speak very loud and clear cause they don’t have big ears like us and sometimes they mishear things, and this can cause problems. For instance, a wee while ago we told them about ladybugs but they thought we said lazy-bugs…and ever since then they’ve been carrying them wherever they need to go in an attempt to help them be even more lazy!
